Helical gears are cylindrical gears with teeth inclined at an angle to the axis. Compared to spur gears, they deliver smoother transmission, superior meshing performance, higher contact ratio, enhanced tooth strength, quieter operation, and reduced vibration, along with greater power transmission capacity. In practical applications, these characteristics - including stable transmission, low impact, minimal vibration, and reduced noise - make helical gears extensively used in high-speed and heavy-duty scenarios.
Distinct from spur gears, helical gears feature a spiral tooth line that generates axial thrust. This thrust can be counteracted using thrust bearings or by combining left- and right-hand helical gears to form herringbone gears. Note that helical gears differ from crossed helical gears: the latter refers specifically to a meshing configuration of two helical gears with non-parallel, non-intersecting axes, distinguished by their spatial force transmission angles.
For proper meshing, paired helical gears must have identical helix angles but opposite helical directions (left/right-hand), while maintaining equal normal modules and normal pressure angles . Gear transmissions universally offer reliable operation, constant transmission ratios, high efficiency, adaptability for motion transfer between any spatial axes, and broad versatility.
