Definition and Standards

Definition: Welded-steel mill chains are a type of chain used in rolling mills and related material conveying and transmission equipment. They are typically manufactured from high-strength steel through processes such as welding and heat treatment.

 

Standards: Relevant international standards, such as ISO 6972:1982 and ISO 6972:2002, specify in detail the dimensions, shapes, structures, manufacturing processes, quality requirements, inspection, and testing methods for welded steel type angle chains and sprockets. In China, the equivalent national standard is GB/T 15390-2005 Welded Structural Offset Link Chains, Attachments and Sprockets for Engineering Use.

Structure and Types

Structure: It is mainly composed of chain links connected by welding. Each chain link includes components such as side plates, pins, and bushings. Some chains may also be equipped with rollers to reduce friction and wear. Its unique designs, such as offset side bars or cranked links, make the chain more flexible during operation and facilitate maintenance and adjustment.

 

Types: Common types include welded steel mill chains with offset side bars (or cranked links), welded steel mill chains with straight side bars, and welded stainless steel mill chains, etc.

Manufacturing Processes

Welding: Advanced welding technologies are adopted to firmly connect the components of each chain link, ensuring the quality of weld seams and avoiding welding defects such as pores, slag inclusions, and cracks, thus guaranteeing the overall strength of the chain.

 

Heat Treatment: The chain undergoes heat treatment processes such as quenching and tempering to improve the hardness, strength, and toughness of the chain material, enhance its mechanical properties, increase wear resistance and fatigue resistance, and extend its service life.

 

Surface Treatment: To improve the corrosion resistance and wear resistance of the chain, surface treatments such as galvanizing, nickel plating, and blackening are usually applied.
